Here at Protape we very are excited about the release of the first ever portable 4TB rugged drive!
The LaCie Rugged RAID weighs just 0.56kg so is light enough (and small enough) to carry around in your bag – it’s only slighty taller than the standard rugged triple (dimensions 34 x 91 x 148 mm) so we think it’s the ideal portable 4TB drive solution.
The unit is bus powered when connected via the integrated thunderbolt cable although it requires mains power when using the high speed USB3 port. Considering most Apple MACs ship with thunderbolt these days we think this is pretty good.
The Rugged RAID has two switchable hardware RAID modes. Use RAID 0 (striped mode) when you want to use the full 4TB capacity and utilise both drives speed for video editing. Switch to RAID 1 (mirrored mode) in order to have 2 duplicate copies of files. This gives you 2TB worth of storage and two copies of your data. Should one of the drives fail you still have access to your files on the other drive.
According to LaCie, the Rugged is tested to withstand drops of up to 1.5 meters (5 feet) and being run over by a 1-ton car. We have not been brave enough to test this but should the LaCie Rugged fall out of your bag or get crushed by stacks of suitcases in the airplane cargo hold, your data (should!) remain safe.
With the protective cap in place, the LaCie Rugged is IP 54-rated for superior resistance to dust and water splashing – even during operation.
As with all LaCie hard drives, the LaCie Rugged RAID comes with a useful software bundle including encryption software – LaCie Private-Public (password protection with AES 256-bit software encryption) and backup software – LaCie Backup Assistant.
All profesional LaCie products come with a 3 year warranty. The LaCie rugged RAID 4TB as you would expect is a pro’ product so should you have any hardware issues or drive failures within the 3 years, the drive can be sent back for repair or replacement (depending on the fault). The warranty can also be extended by purchasing a warranty upgrade!
Currently there is not any competition in the market place for this product. Most other mobile drives only go up to 2TB, with the exception of the Glyph 4TB Studio RAID Mini which has FW, USB3 and eSATA but no thunderbolt!
So if you require a high capacity 4TB mobile drive this is the only way to go. With most MACs shipping with Thunderbolt connection, this drive is ideal. For those with USB3 (or USB2) – the unit will also work with the included power supply. We also think the unit is fairly priced.
